Impact production: What is it and why is it needed?

Coined back in 2012 by Doc Society (then BritDoc), the term Impact Production has long served as an effective tool driving real-world social and environmental change through independent documentary film. But for years, those of us working in this space faced a familiar challenge: keeping this essential practice from remaining one of the industry's best-kept secrets.

At ImpactWild, we’ve spent years working alongside fellow impact producers to push for formal recognition across the broader broadcast sector. From advising major broadcasters like Sky - who has since integrated impact production directly into their infrastructure - to consulting with UK production companies, executives, and BAFTA Albert, the goal has always been to mainstream the movement.

A Watershed Moment for Impact

That persistence paid off. In October 2025, BAFTA Albert officially announced their support and recognition of impact production as a vital, necessary role within the modern screen industry.

It was a huge victory, but our mission doesn't stop. To truly scale our reach, we needed to take the conversation directly to the audiences shaping everyday television. That inspired us to pitch and publish the first-ever dedicated article (to our knowledge) on impact production in a mainstream broadcast magazine.

Moving into the Mainstream

The response proved just how hungry the sector is for this work. The article quickly climbed into the publication's top 10 most-read pieces, holding its spot for weeks and introducing the mechanics of impact to thousands of executives, directors, and crew members who had never encountered it before.

Moving screen storytelling from passive viewing to active engagement isn't a niche luxury - it’s the future of broadcast. As the industry continues to evolve, we’re excited to keep expanding the blueprint for what stories can achieve when strategy meets story.
