NBC Universal's Hamnet: The Power of Nature

We recently had the privilege of joining a panel at NBC Universal (UK) to discuss a shift happening across the industry: weaving nature directly into our storytelling - not merely as a picturesque backdrop, but as a core narrative force.

The conversation centered on the feature film Hamnet, exploring how it placed nature at its heart both in front of and behind the camera. From on-screen themes to sustainable production practices, the film offers a powerful template for helping audiences reconnect with the natural world.

Leading with a Nature-Centered Lens

Sharing the stage with fellow panellists Steve Smith (Picture Zero Ltd) and Laurie Borg (Producer on Hamnet) offered a compelling look at how the project was conceived, developed, and produced.

What stood out most was the ripple effect of nature-centered leadership. When production leaders commit to putting the natural world at the heart of their workflow, it transforms the experience for the crew on set just as much as it moves the audience in the theater.

To us, Hamnet represents a cultural watershed moment. Viewers responded deeply to the film's nature-focused cinematography and the character Agnes’s profound connection to the living world.

To us, "Hamnet" marks a cultural moment not to be overlooked. Audiences responded to both the nature-focused cinematography and Agnes's inherent connection to the natural world. There is a real impact opportunity to build strategic partnerships with environmental organisations to connect directly with those audiences moved by the film. Initiatives like seed libraries, hedgerow walks, and medicinal plant garden workshops could enhance nature literacy as something historically rooted in communities ... not just something we need to urgently rebuild.

A huge thank you to NBC Universal for hosting such an inspiring event, and to Danusia Samal from Green Rider for expertly moderating the discussion.
